Arbol Cuadrado - The Square Tree

El Valle de Antón
Anton's Valley aka El Valle is a 9,000 soul town in Panama in the province of Cocle. Located in a 5 Million years dormant and 6 miles wide crater, it is a tiny World in itself. The 600 Meter elevation keeps it cooler than the lowlands and the many Natural attractions make it a great vacation spot. Two beautiful waterfalls called 'Las Mozas' and 'Chorro El Macho', besides a group of thermal pools consisting of cement pools colored by whichever minerals are present at the moment, give it a few great places to go.
And then there are...
The Square Trees
Arbol Cuadrado, the Square Tree, is named for its often square looking trunk. The base of the trunk is almost completely square; even when measured with measuring tape.
In addition and a interesting fact is that the tree rings, used to measure the age of a tree, are square too. At roughly 36-45 feet (12-15 meters), the tree ads nicely to the surrounding jungle of beautiful plants.
One would think that something as fascinating as a square tree would cause some interest. But I haven't even been able to find any botanical information about this tree.
The first time I heard about it was from a great Professor at my University when he taught a Latin America class. He spend years traveling all over Latin America and brought a ton of great things and some interesting information back.
It would be interesting to travel to this tiny Garden Eden and see the trees that redefine what we know about trees.

How interesting. And so odd that you couldn't find more info on them.
